Abstract
Septima Poinsette Clark (1898-1987) was born in Charleston, South Carolina to Peter Porcher Poinsette and Victoria Anderson. Clark attended small private schools and Avery Institute, getting a teacher's certificate in 1916. She married Nerie Clark (1889-1925) of North Carolina, a navy cook in 1920; they had one surviving child Nerie Clark, Jr. (born 1925). This collection consists of assorted legal instruments and correspondence that document the ownership of parcels of land on the Pocotaligo River, Prince Williams Parish, Beaufort District from 1764 to 1850. Known variously as Myrtle Grove, Live Oak, Providence and/or Leith plantations, they were cultivated (circa 1799) in cotton and rice, and were owned by various members of the Cuthbert, Rutledge, Palmer, Stoutenberg, Corbett, Heyward, and other families.
